HISTORY OF VIKING BANK
THE VIKING BANK STORY

Viking Bank’s story began in April 1981 when a dedicated group of Alexandria residents recognized the need for a truly local financial institution, one owned locally and committed to making decisions with the community’s best interests in mind. Their vision became reality when Viking Savings Association opened its doors at 504 Broadway in downtown Alexandria, on the corner where the CTB Building now stands.

Viking Savings Association was established as a state-chartered mutual savings association and was notable for receiving the first such charter issued in Minnesota by the Commerce Commission’s Banking Division in more than 20 years. In November 1982, the institution converted to a federal charter, allowing it to expand its services during a period of significant change in the banking industry.

As the organization grew, so did its need for space. In December 1984, operations moved to the former Pete’s Super Valu building at 1311 Broadway, where the bank continued to expand its services and customer base. Over time, the name was changed to Viking Bank to better reflect the full range of banking services offered.

In October 2007, ownership transitioned to another group of local investors dedicated to preserving the bank’s independence and community-focused mission. Today, Viking Bank remains 100% locally owned and is still the only bank chartered in the City of Alexandria. With headquarters firmly rooted in the community it serves, the bank is able to make responsive local decisions while ensuring customer deposits continue to support local families, businesses, and economic growth.

To better serve customers and accommodate continued growth, Viking Bank began construction of a new facility in spring 2016. In January 2017, the bank relocated to its current headquarters at 4277 Dakota Street in Alexandria. The new building provided expanded space, modern technology, and enhanced convenience while maintaining the personal service and local commitment customers have always valued.

Viking Bank’s growth continued in December 2019 with the acquisition of First State Bank of Ashby, helping ensure the Ashby community would continue to have a locally focused, relationship-driven bank. In December 2025, Viking Bank expanded once again by opening a third location in Brandon, further strengthening its ability to serve customers throughout this west-central Minnesota area.

Today, Viking Bank proudly serves customers from its three locations in Alexandria, Ashby, and Brandon. While our facilities and technology have evolved, our mission remains unchanged: delivering exceptional customer service, local decision-making, and financial support that helps strengthen the communities we call home.
